One lower-end smartphone making a splash lately isn't from the likes of Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), Nokia (NYSE: NOK), and it doesn't run Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android or BlackBerry's (Nasdaq: BBRY) BB10 operating systems. So, what is it?
Making the rounds at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, is the Geeksphone Keon. The device runs an operating system from Mozilla called FireFox OS. You may be using the FireFox Internet browser right now, actually.
The display is a 3.5-inch HVGA, it has a 1-gigahertz Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM) Snapdragon processor, 512-megabytes (MB) of RAM, and a few other bells and whistles. No pricing was speculated on the device.
Debut of the device comes as Nokia recently announced new, low-end Lumia smartphones. The market for such devices is getting hot as incomes and tastes in emerging markets continuing expanding.
Investors should keep an eye on the Keon over the next few months to see what sort of pricing and carrier support it will garner.
