Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) announced the expansion of its less-than-truckload freight service to serve businesses of all sizes, shipping to any destination including third-party warehouses, distribution centers, and retail partners. The service was previously limited to inbound shipments to Amazon facilities.
The expanded LTL service allows businesses to ship partial loads by pallet, typically ranging from one to six pallets or between 150 and 15,000 pounds, rather than paying for full truckload capacity. Amazon has served tens of thousands of selling partners and vendors through its LTL service since 2019, moving millions of pallets across its U.S. network last year.
The service offers next-day live pickup for orders placed by 5 p.m., same-day pickup through drop trailer solutions, and standing daily pickups for high-volume shippers. Amazon provides real-time GPS tracking, automated appointment scheduling, and electronic proof of delivery.
"In the past year, we've seen faster transit times and lower costs compared to traditional LTL services," said Zech Hintz, vice president of global supply chain at Pattern, a customer using the service.
Amazon Freight operates with more than 80,000 trailers and 24,000 intermodal containers across terminals in major U.S. metropolitan areas. The fleet includes cargo cameras and door sensors for freight security monitoring.
The LTL expansion is part of Amazon Supply Chain Services, which provides businesses access to Amazon's logistics infrastructure including freight, distribution, fulfillment, and parcel shipping capabilities developed over nearly three decades.
