Nokia launches Deepfield Genome Shield DDoS protection system

Nokia Corporation (NYSE: NOK) announced the launch of Nokia Deepfield Genome Shield, a security automation system designed to provide DDoS protection for telecommunications providers, hosting companies, internet exchange points, and cloud builders.

The system addresses threats from residential proxy botnets, which Nokia states now comprise approximately 200 million compromised devices worldwide. The company estimates these botnets operate at 250-600 Tbps capacity and can deliver multi-terabit attacks lasting seconds to minutes.

Genome Shield operates as an extension to Nokia's existing Deepfield Defender platform. The system aggregates threat intelligence from multiple sources, including Nokia Deepfield Secure Genome, which Nokia claims spans over five billion internet endpoints, along with GDTA telemetry and data from Deepfield's cyber range.

The solution includes four components: Botnet C2 Disruption for blocking command-and-control communications, DDoS Policers for traffic rate limiting, Custom Policies with open APIs, and Observability dashboards for monitoring compromised devices and security trends.

"Protecting our infrastructure from inbound DDoS attacks while managing compromised subscriber devices requires carrier-grade automation," said Charlie Attoum, Network Infrastructure Director at Reddot, a customer using the system.

Jeff Smith, Vice-President and General Manager of Nokia Deepfield, stated that residential proxy botnets have changed how attacks function and defense strategies. He noted that the system serves more than 1,000 hosting companies, service providers, and internet exchange points.

Genome Shield requires Nokia Deepfield Defender and supports deployment through router-based edge mitigation or Nokia's 7750 Defender Mitigation System. The system offers on-premises, cloud-based, and hybrid deployment options with flexible licensing.

Nokia reported that initial Genome Shield capabilities are already operational within Deepfield Defender for current customers, with additional features scheduled for rollout throughout 2026.
