RTX (NYSE: RTX) announced a $100 million investment to expand its Portsmouth, Rhode Island facility, according to a company press release. The expansion will increase capacity for Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor testing and boost production of Patriot GEM-T subcomponents.
The project is expected to create 150 jobs at the facility. Tom Laliberty, president of Land & Air Defense Systems at Raytheon, an RTX business, stated the investment will strengthen the company's ability to deliver air and missile defense capabilities to customers worldwide.
The announcement follows an earlier $53 million expansion of RTX's radar production facility in Andover, Massachusetts, which began eight months ago. The Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor is designed to counter advanced threats including hypersonic weapons.
Raytheon currently holds contracts for multiple LTAMDS radars for the U.S. Army and Poland. The program recently completed its ninth flight test, using the radar's arrays to track and intercept a target.
The Patriot Advanced Capability-2 Guidance Enhanced Missile-Tactical is designed to intercept airborne threats including tactical ballistic missiles and serves as an effector for the Patriot air and missile defense system.
RTX businesses have operated in Rhode Island for more than 60 years and currently employ over 850 people in the state. The Portsmouth campus supports undersea technology, combat systems and radar development.
RTX reported 2025 sales of more than $88 billion and employs over 180,000 people globally. The company is headquartered in Arlington, Virginia.
