Babcock & Wilcox to support TerraSpark's 1.6 GW coal plant in West Virginia

Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises Inc. (NYSE: BW) announced it will collaborate with TerraSpark on a planned 1.6-gigawatt coal-fired power plant project in West Virginia. The TerraSpark Energy Campus project has received an $18.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.

Under the collaboration, Babcock & Wilcox would design and supply four 400-megawatt supercritical boilers and emissions control equipment for the project. Babcock & Wilcox Construction Co. would provide construction services. The company will also work with Mantel for carbon capture technology implementation.

The project includes plans for a multi-industry campus and a Coal Innovation & Training Center focused on rare earth extraction and advanced materials initiatives alongside the power generation facility.

"This project aligns with B&W's continued commitment to serving the U.S. coal fleet, which is a reliable, secure and essential component of the nation's energy mix," said Jimmy Morgan, Babcock & Wilcox Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer.

Bill Tolpegin, partner at TerraSpark, stated that Babcock & Wilcox "will be a key part" of the project team, citing the company's experience in power generation.

Cameron Halliday, co-founder and CEO of Mantel, noted that the collaboration would help develop "the next generation of low-emission power systems" through advanced boiler design and emission control technologies.
