Elanco Animal Health Incorporated (NYSE: ELAN) announced treatment options for New World screwworm following the first confirmed case in U.S. livestock in Texas. The parasite had been eradicated from the United States more than 50 years ago.
New World screwworm larvae feed on living tissue and can affect warm-blooded animals including livestock, pets, wildlife and humans. The company offers several treatment products that have received emergency authorization or conditional approval from federal agencies.
Elanco's treatment portfolio includes Credelio Quattro-A1 for dogs with FDA conditional approval, and Credelio products for dogs and cats under FDA Emergency Use Authorization. For livestock, the company offers Negasunt Powder and Tanidil under emergency authorizations, plus Catron IV with EPA approval.
Negasunt Powder and Tanidil will be distributed only through the U.S. Animal Plant Health and Inspection Service National Veterinary Stockpile in coordination with state animal health officials and tribal agencies.
"New World screwworm could have a devastating impact on animal health, welfare, and producer livelihoods," said Jeff Simmons, President and CEO of Elanco Animal Health.
The products carry various safety warnings and usage restrictions. Negasunt Powder includes a neurotoxicity warning requiring protective equipment during application. Treatment restrictions include withdrawal periods for animals intended for food production.
Elanco stated it has more than 70 years of animal health experience including treating New World screwworm in other parts of the world.
