China, US hold talks on air, maritime safety in Hawaii

Investing.com -- China and the United States held exchanges at a meeting in Hawaii on air and maritime safety last week, with both sides agreeing that improved communication could reduce miscalculations and enhance professionalism, the Chinese Navy said.

The May 28-29 meeting was attended by representatives from both militaries, according to a statement released Monday.

The U.S. Indo-Pacific Command said it hosted representatives from the People's Liberation Army in Honolulu for discussions focused on reducing the risk of unsafe encounters.

The meeting follows a summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump last month. Top Chinese military officials were absent from the Shangri-La Dialogue, a regional defense forum, in Singapore over the weekend.

China views Taiwan as its own territory and has not ruled out the use of force against the island. The U.S. is bound by law to arm Taipei, which Beijing opposes.

The Chinese Navy statement stressed the importance of communication and said China opposes any action that undermines its sovereignty and security.
