Athene names Matthew Michelini president of holding company

Athene announced that Matthew Michelini will become president of Athene Holding Ltd. effective July 1, 2026. Michelini previously served as Apollo's Head of Asia-Pacific and has been with Apollo Global Management Inc. (NYSE: APO) for nearly 20 years.
In his new role, Michelini will oversee alignment across Athene and advance growth initiatives, including the company's guaranteed lifetime income solutions. Athene operates as a subsidiary of Apollo Global Management.
"We are thrilled to have Matt join Athene's senior leadership team," said Grant Kvalheim, CEO of Athene, according to the company's statement. The appointment reflects what the company describes as continued momentum and expanding platform breadth across products and channels.
Michelini joined Apollo in 2006 and contributed to the creation of several Apollo initiatives, including Athene, Hybrid Value, and the Apollo Dedicated Insurance Program. Since September 2021, he has been based in Asia developing Apollo and Athene's capabilities across the Asia-Pacific region.
Before joining Apollo, Michelini worked in the Mergers & Acquisitions group at Lazard Frères & Co. He previously served on the boards of Athene Holding Ltd. and other companies.
Athene reported total assets of $448 billion as of March 31, 2026, and operates in the United States, Bermuda, Canada, and Japan. The company provides retirement income and savings products to individuals and serves as a solutions provider to corporations.
