JetBlue Airways Corp (NASDAQ: JBLU) announced plans to launch nonstop service between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Simón Bolívar International Airport in Caracas, Venezuela. The route would mark the airline's first service to Venezuela.
The airline plans to begin service before the end of the year, with tickets expected to go on sale in the coming months. The proposed route requires government approval and completion of applicable processes to operate in Venezuela.
JetBlue will operate the route using Airbus A320 aircraft. The service aims to connect South Florida's Venezuelan community with family members and provide access to JetBlue's broader network across the Americas.
"South Florida is home to a large Venezuelan community, and this new route would help connect families and loved ones with JetBlue's competitive fares and award-winning service," said Dave Jehn, vice president of network planning and airline partnerships at JetBlue.
The announcement follows JetBlue's expansion in Fort Lauderdale, where the airline operates nearly 130 daily departures during summer months. The company recently announced 11 new destinations and additional flights from the airport across the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean.
Fort Lauderdale serves as one of JetBlue's focus cities and a gateway to the Caribbean and Latin America. The airline operates from more than 100 destinations throughout the United States, Latin America, the Caribbean, Canada and Europe.
