Viasat reaches 1,000 aircraft milestone for SB-S safety service

Viasat Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT) announced that 1,000 aircraft are now using its Swift-Broadband-Safety service, marking a milestone for the satellite communications company's aviation safety offerings.

The SB-S service, introduced in 2018, provides certified safety communications that support air traffic control communications, airline operations and regulatory compliance. The service has grown at an average rate of 42% per year since launch, according to the company's statement.

Viasat aims to have SB-S installed on more than 1,200 aircraft by the end of 2026. The company currently connects more than 12,000 aircraft cockpits globally across its entire aviation safety portfolio, which includes SB-S and its Classic Aero service.

The SB-S system operates as a broadband IP datalink for operations and safety communications in flight decks. It delivers safety services through traditional ACARS data link and next-generation IP connections, enabling operational functions including engine monitoring, real-time weather updates, telemedicine and preventive maintenance.

The service also supports Iris, Viasat's air-traffic management program with the European Space Agency. The satellite-based data link system is designed to minimize flight delays and reduce fuel consumption for airlines and Air Navigation Service Providers.

The SB-S service is part of Viasat's Communication Services financial segment within its commercial business operations.
