Micron Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: MU) started manufacturing 1α DRAM memory chips at its Manassas, Virginia facility, marking the most advanced memory technology production in the United States. The company announced the milestone during an event attended by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and other government officials.
The 1α node technology will quadruple Micron's DDR4 wafer supply at the Manassas facility, supporting automotive, defense, aerospace, industrial, networking and medical device sectors. Micron expects qualified 1α DRAM production from the facility by the end of 2026.
The Virginia expansion represents part of Micron's $200 billion U.S. investment plan, which includes projects in Idaho and New York expected to create 90,000 jobs. The Manassas facility received more than $2 billion in investment and supports over 3,100 manufacturing and community jobs.
"Today's achievement is an important step in Micron's $200 billion investment plan to expand memory manufacturing and R&D in the U.S.," said CEO Sanjay Mehrotra.
Micron is the only U.S. manufacturer of memory chips. The company broke ground on its New York memory manufacturing complex in January and expects initial wafer output at its first Idaho facility in mid-2027.
The Virginia facility will produce DDR4 and LP4 memory products designed for long-lifecycle applications. Micron has committed over $325 million to workforce development programs across Virginia, Idaho and New York, including partnerships with community colleges and apprenticeship programs.
