Spotify (NYSE: SPOT) announced the introduction of verification badges for podcast shows to help authenticate creator identity and combat impersonation on its platform.
The "Verified by Spotify" badges will appear alongside a green checkmark icon on show pages and in search results. The feature identifies shows as the official presence of creators, publishers, or brands after review against Spotify's authenticity and trust standards.
The badges began appearing on select shows and will roll out over the coming months. Eligibility focuses on shows with sustained listener activity, good standing with platform policies, and verified audience authenticity including safeguards against fraudulent or bot-driven listenership.
The streaming service also reinforced its impersonation policies regarding artificial intelligence technology. Spotify stated it will remove podcast shows and content that impersonate another creator or host's likeness without permission, whether using AI voice cloning or other methods.
The company's existing policies have prohibited unauthorized impersonation, but the updated policy specifically addresses AI-generated content. Spotify maintains existing reporting channels for unauthorized use of a creator's voice or identity.
The verification system builds on Spotify's recent work in music authentication. The company described the measures as initial steps in supporting a more trustworthy podcast ecosystem as the medium continues to grow.
Spotify did not specify the number of shows that will initially receive verification badges or provide a timeline for broader rollout beyond "coming months."
