Bausch + Lomb Corporation (NYSE: BLCO) launched PreserVision AREDS3 eye vitamins in the United States, combining clinically proven AREDS2 nutrients with a B-vitamin complex for age-related macular degeneration support.
The product builds on the AREDS2 nutrients recommended by the National Eye Institute to help reduce the risk of moderate-to-advanced AMD progression by adding a proprietary B-vitamin complex. The formula includes thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, biotin, folate and vitamin B12.
AMD affects approximately 28 million people in the United States and is the leading cause of vision loss among older Americans. The progressive condition can impact central vision and interfere with daily activities such as driving and reading.
The development of PreserVision AREDS3 was informed by scientific research on B vitamins in AMD, including findings from a narrative review published in Ophthalmology and Therapy that analyzed more than 20 human studies involving nearly 30,000 individuals over two decades.
"AMD affects millions of people, often long before symptoms meaningfully change day-to-day life," said John Ferris, president, Consumer, Bausch + Lomb. "PreserVision AREDS3 reflects decades of research, and our commitment to advancing eye health through science, offering an option for a broader range of people looking to support their macular health."
The company states the formula provides two times better absorption of key nutrients compared to the original PreserVision AREDS 2 Soft Gel and is designed for people in earlier stages of AMD. Bausch + Lomb plans a future long-term clinical trial to evaluate the formulation.
PreserVision AREDS3 eye vitamins are available at retailers including Amazon, Target, Walgreens and Walmart, according to the company's announcement.
