LanzaTech picks Ghent for Europe's first commercial alcohol-to-jet fuel plant

LanzaTech Global Inc. (NASDAQ: LNZA) selected North Sea Port in Ghent, Belgium as the location for Europe's first commercial-scale alcohol-to-jet sustainable aviation fuel facility. The company submitted an Environmental Impact Assessment scoping notification to Belgian authorities as part of the FLITE project development process.

The facility will use LanzaTech's alcohol-to-jet process to produce sustainable aviation fuel that complies with CORSIA, EU ReFuelEU Aviation, and UK SAF Mandate regulations. The project is part of the FLITE consortium, which receives support from EU Horizon 2020 funding.

Construction is expected to create approximately 300 full-time equivalent positions over three years, with around 50 permanent jobs once operational. The facility will be located near ArcelorMittal's Steelanol ethanol plant across the canal from the selected site.

"This is a world-class location that gives the project every advantage it needs to succeed," said Jennifer Holmgren, CEO of LanzaTech. The company stated that front-end engineering design work is substantially complete, with feedstock supply letters of intent and offtake frameworks established.

North Sea Port spans 60 kilometers from Vlissingen in the Netherlands to Ghent in Belgium. The port handles 67 million tonnes of cargo annually and ranks ninth among European ports by cargo volume, according to the announcement.

LanzaTech uses gas-fermentation technology to convert waste carbon into fuels and chemicals. The company is headquartered in the United States and trades on NASDAQ under the ticker LNZA.
