OPAL Fuels Inc. (NASDAQ: OPAL) hosted Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. (NC-03) at its Sapphire renewable natural gas facility located at the Sampson County Landfill in Roseboro, North Carolina, according to a company statement.
The visit included a facility tour and meeting with OPAL Fuels Co-Chief Executive Officer Adam Comora. The discussions focused on domestic renewable natural gas production's role in energy security, economic support for Eastern North Carolina, and providing heavy-duty fleets with an alternative to diesel fuel.
The Sapphire facility captures methane from organic waste decomposition at the Sampson County landfill and converts it into pipeline-quality renewable natural gas for heavy-duty fleet use. The plant has a design capacity of approximately 0.80 million MMBtus per year, equivalent to 6.6 million gasoline gallon equivalents.
"We were honored to host Dr. Murphy and showcase how facilities like Sapphire turn local landfill waste into American-made energy," Comora said in the statement. He noted that policies like the Section 45Z Clean Fuel Production Credit have provided confidence for infrastructure investment.
Murphy stated he enjoyed touring the facility and meeting with leadership to discuss renewable energy development in Eastern North Carolina. "These conversations are critical as we work to support policies that encourage responsible energy development, strengthen our workforce, and expand opportunity across the region," he said.
The company stated that renewable natural gas produced at facilities like Sapphire provides fleet operators with pricing stability and lower operating costs compared to diesel while delivering domestic energy security advantages.
OPAL Fuels operates as a producer and distributor of renewable natural gas, focusing on biogas capture and conversion into low carbon intensity fuel for heavy-duty trucking and industrial sectors.
