Bausch + Lomb Corporation (NYSE: BLCO) announced the European launch of its Bi-Blade+ dual-port vitrectomy cutter on the Stellaris Elite Vision Enhancement System, according to a company press release.
The device operates at 25,000 cuts per minute and provides a 25% increase in flow rate compared to the previous Bi-Blade model. The cutter is designed for vitreous removal during retinal surgery procedures.
When used with Adaptive Fluidics software, the Bi-Blade+ demonstrated a 62% reduction in average infusion pressure compared to surgeries without the software. The system automates fluid infusion to the eye in response to real-time vacuum commands from surgeons.
At maximum speed, the device shows a 62% reduction in cutter vibration compared to the original Bi-Blade model. Testing indicated the combination resulted in intraocular pressure stability within a 10-20 mmHg range during high vacuum levels.
"The higher cut rate of Bi-Blade+ offers a significant advantage when removing vitreous," said Professor Marco Mura of the University of Ferrara in Italy. "The ability to increase flow rate while maintaining a small sphere of influence and calm environment means surgeons can have more confidence when working close to the retina."
The vitrectomy cutter is indicated for ocular conditions requiring anterior vitrectomy during anterior segment surgery and vitreoretinal conditions requiring vitrectomy during posterior or combined surgery. The device is compatible only with Bausch + Lomb Stellaris Elite vision enhancement systems.
Bausch + Lomb previously upgraded the Stellaris Elite platform with Adaptive Fluidics software in 2024.
