Cibus transfers gene-edited rice traits to partner Interoc for testing

Cibus Inc. (NASDAQ: CBUS) announced the transfer of gene-edited herbicide tolerance traits in rice to its partner Interoc, enabling the Latin American company to begin testing and production activities.

The agricultural technology company said the transfer allows Interoc to commence preparation for launching enhanced seed products in the Latin American market. Cibus develops plant traits using gene-editing technologies and licenses them to partners rather than selling seeds directly.

"Rice is a critical crop for the Latin American economy, and we are committed to providing growers with advanced traits that optimize their productivity," said Fernando De La Puente, Corporate Vice President at Interoc.

Peter Beetham, Co-founder and Interim Chief Executive Officer of Cibus, said the milestone was achieved within development timelines. He stated that the company expects to deliver additional gene-edited materials to partners over the coming year as more traits progress toward commercialization.

Cibus uses its Rapid Trait Development System to develop plant characteristics that address productivity, yield and sustainability challenges. The San Diego-based company focuses on major global row crops and generates revenue through licensing agreements and royalties.

Interoc operates as an agricultural solutions company in Latin America, specializing in crop protection technologies and hybrid seeds. The company has over 30 years of experience in the region.

Martin Poveda, Senior Director Rice & Business Affairs at Cibus, said the partnership involves creating solutions for Interoc's markets and customers. He noted that Cibus has several improved traits in development for Interoc's product lines in rice and other crops.
