Ouster launches Rev8 lidar sensors with native color technology

Ouster Inc. (NASDAQ: OUST) announced its Rev8 family of digital lidar sensors, which the company says features the first native color lidar technology. The sensors are powered by Ouster's L4 and L4 Max silicon architecture.

The Rev8 family includes redesigned OS0, OS1, and OSDome sensors, plus a new flagship OS1 Max model. The OS1 Max offers a 256-channel architecture with detection ranges up to 200 meters at 10% reflectivity and maximum detection of 500 meters. The sensor provides a 45-degree field of view and doubles the range and resolution compared to the previous Rev7 generation.

The L4 architecture processes 42.9 GMACs with detection capabilities of up to 20 trillion photons per second. It features a 40 kHz measurement rate and can process up to 10.4 million points per second. The technology incorporates Fujifilm color science and operates across lighting conditions from 1 lux to 2 million lux.

According to the company, the native color sensors combine 3D structure and color data through hardware rather than software fusion. Each measurement point includes color information with 48-bit color depth and 116 dB dynamic range.

The sensors are designed to meet automotive-grade standards and cybersecurity requirements including ISO 21434, with planned certifications for ASIL-B to ISO 26262, SIL-2 to IEC 61508, and PLd to ISO 13849 functional safety standards.

Companies including Google, Volvo Autonomous Solutions, Liebherr, Epiroc, and Skydio have indicated plans to adopt the Rev8 sensors. The sensors are available for order and shipping began this quarter, according to the company's announcement.

"Rev8 is the most advanced family of lidar sensors ever released and sets a new standard in sensing," said CEO Angus Pacala in the statement.
