NRC extends FPL's St. Lucie nuclear plant license through 2063

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved subsequent license renewals for Florida Power & Light Company's St. Lucie Nuclear Plant Units 1 and 2, extending operations through 2056 and 2063, respectively. The approval follows a multi-year application and review process.

St. Lucie Nuclear Plant began commercial operations in 1976 for Unit 1 and 1983 for Unit 2. The facility generates electricity for more than 1 million homes and businesses and supplies approximately 11% of FPL's generation. The plant operates on a 1,200-acre site on Hutchinson Island.

"This approval ensures that St. Lucie will continue to provide safe, reliable, low-cost energy for generations to come," said Scott Bores, Florida Power & Light Company's president.

The plant provides approximately 400 permanent jobs and generates more than $42 million in annual county taxes. In 2024, the NRC approved similar license renewals for Turkey Point, Florida's other operational nuclear plant.

The license extension adds to NextEra Energy's (NYSE: NEE) portfolio of renewed nuclear facilities, which includes Turkey Point Nuclear Plant and Point Beach Nuclear Plant operated by subsidiary NextEra Energy Resources.
