American Express (NYSE: AXP) announced the launch of its Agentic Commerce Experiences Developer Kit, a framework designed to enable AI agents to conduct transactions on the company's network. The kit includes five integrated services: agent registration, account enablement, intent intelligence, payment credentials, and cart context.
The company also introduced Amex Agent Purchase Protection, which it describes as an industry-first commitment to protect cardholders from charges related to AI agent errors when agents are registered and purchase intent is authenticated. Terms and conditions will apply to this protection.
"AI agents are beginning to reshape how people discover products and services, plan travel and dining, and make purchases," said Luke Gebb, Executive Vice President and Head of Global Innovation at American Express.
The developer kit aims to provide transaction visibility across American Express's closed-loop network, which operates as issuer, network, and acquirer. The company stated that merchants may benefit from lower disputes and chargebacks, while cardholders will have access to granular spending controls through the Amex app.
American Express indicated it is currently enabling AI-assisted transactions with AI platform partners and collaborating with AI companies and industry associations on standards for agentic payment ecosystems. Some services within the kit are still in development.
The company outlined three priorities for its agentic commerce work: embedding payment capabilities into AI ecosystems, making membership assets discoverable across AI platforms, and building AI-powered experiences on its owned platforms.
