IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) and the University of Maryland announced a multi-year expansion of their partnership through the National Quantum Laboratory, with a $7.5 million agreement focused on quantum computing, quantum networking, and workforce development.
The funding comes from the State of Maryland's Capital of Quantum Initiative via the University of Maryland Economic Development Corporation. This builds on a strategic partnership first announced in September 2024.
The expansion includes four components: deployment of a quantum memory node for networking capabilities, increased quantum compute access for researchers and students, joint applications research on quantum machine learning and error-correcting codes, and development of specialized laser systems for advanced quantum algorithms.
The quantum memory node represents the first deployment of IonQ's silicon vacancy-based quantum memory technology. This infrastructure will complement existing University of Maryland efforts, including the Mid-Atlantic Region Quantum Internet network.
"Our longstanding partnership with the University of Maryland meets the need to accelerate access to advanced quantum computing, quantum networking capabilities, and talent development," said Niccolo de Masi, Chairman and CEO of IonQ.
University of Maryland President Darryll J. Pines said the agreement "strengthens the QLab as a premier testbed for quantum networking and computing and deepens opportunities for our faculty and students to work hands-on with industry-leading systems."
The collaboration positions QLab as a testbed for quantum technologies and emphasizes hands-on training for students with commercial-grade quantum systems. IonQ maintains similar partnerships with the University of Cambridge, U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory, University of Chicago, and the state of Tennessee.
