MediWound Ltd. (NASDAQ: MDWD) announced that a peer-reviewed consensus published in WOUNDS journal aligns with the company's approach to chronic wound treatment. The consensus, authored by U.S. wound care experts, presents a framework for debridement approaches across different care settings.
The panel redefined debridement beyond simple tissue removal to include biologically active interventions that reduce biofilm and bacterial burden while reactivating wound healing processes. The experts emphasized using effective, less invasive treatments initially before considering more aggressive surgical methods.
The consensus noted that no single current treatment addresses all clinical needs, highlighting the importance of flexible treatment strategies. MediWound stated this supports the need for advanced therapies that provide rapid outcomes without surgical intervention.
The company's EscharEx treatment is a bromelain-based enzymatic therapy in clinical development for chronic wound debridement. The therapy is designed for daily topical use and has demonstrated wound bed preparation effectiveness in Phase II studies. A global Phase III trial for venous leg ulcers is currently underway, with studies for diabetic foot ulcers and pressure ulcers planned for the second half of 2026.
"This consensus spotlights a clear need for a first-line debridement therapy that is both easy to use and clinically effective," said Dr. Vickie Driver, a MediWound board member and wound care expert. "EscharEx, if approved, may be well positioned to address this need."
MediWound develops enzymatic therapies for tissue repair and markets NexoBrid, an FDA-approved treatment for thermal burn eschar removal in the United States, European Union, Japan and other international markets.
