Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) announced that the permanent Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System J-code for INLEXZO, its gemcitabine intravesical system, is now in effect. The unique identifier J9183, assigned by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, can be used by government and commercial payers for billing and reimbursement processes.
INLEXZO received FDA approval in September 2025 for treating adult patients with Bacillus Calmette-Guérin-unresponsive non-muscle invasive bladder cancer with carcinoma in situ, with or without papillary tumors. The treatment represents the first FDA-approved intravesical drug-releasing system to provide extended local delivery of cancer medication into the bladder.
The permanent billing code addresses administrative complexities that healthcare providers previously faced when seeking reimbursement for the treatment. Physicians and treatment centers can utilize the J9183 code when submitting claims for eligible patients beginning April 1, 2026, subject to individual payer coverage policies.
"Navigating reimbursement complexity shouldn't stand between patients and a therapy that could change their disease trajectory," said Scott White, Chief Operating Officer, North America, Johnson & Johnson. "This permanent code allows healthcare providers to focus on delivering innovative care by helping reduce administrative complexity associated with billing."
The treatment targets patients who have failed BCG therapy and those refusing or ineligible for radical cystectomy. Johnson & Johnson offers a patient support program called J&J withMe, which provides cost support, care navigation, and educational resources at no cost to patients.
