Amprius receives $21 million order for electric vehicle batteries

Amprius Technologies (NYSE: AMPX) announced it secured a $21 million purchase order for its SiCore cylindrical battery cells from an electric mobility customer in China. The silicon anode lithium-ion battery company said the cells will be used in light electric vehicles including scooters, three-wheelers, and motorcycles.

The company's 30 Ah-capacity SiCore cells deliver energy density up to 100% higher than conventional graphite-anode cells, according to the press release. The batteries are rated for more than 2,000 cycles.

"Current conventional batteries used in two and three-wheelers are constrained by their inherently low energy density," said Tom Stepien, CEO of Amprius. "Our silicon anode technology addresses this shortcoming by delivering higher energy density while maintaining the cycle life that these applications require."

The battery market for light electric vehicles is growing at a 15% compound annual growth rate and is projected to reach 26 GWh by 2030, according to a market study by Ratel Consulting cited in the announcement. The growth is attributed to urban mobility needs and increasing electrification.

Amprius Technologies, headquartered in Fremont, California, operates an R&D lab and pilot manufacturing facility for silicon anodes and cells. The company uses a contract manufacturing strategy to support production scaling.
