AeroVironment Inc. (NASDAQ: AVAV) announced the release of its LOCUST X3, a third-generation high-energy laser weapon system designed to counter unmanned aerial threats. The system delivers speed-of-light engagement capabilities for defeating drone attacks.
The LOCUST X3 features a scalable 20-35+ kilowatt laser, modular beam director, and AI-enabled detection and tracking automation powered by the company's AV_Halo PINPOINT software platform. The system offers engagements at approximately $5 per shot and operates without traditional reload limitations.
"In today's rapidly evolving battlespace, adversaries are deploying mass drone attacks and saturation tactics that threaten mission success and warfighter survivability," said Wahid Nawabi, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer at AeroVironment. "With LOCUST X3, we deliver an affordable, scalable solution to outpace and neutralize large-scale aerial threats."
The system builds on the company's existing LOCUST platform, which has been deployed through the Army Multi-Purpose High Energy Laser and Palletized High Energy Laser programs. Previous versions have been validated on platforms including the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle and Infantry Squad Vehicle.
The LOCUST X3 aligns with Department of Defense Modular Open Systems Approach principles, enabling integration across fixed and mobile defense platforms. The system can counter Group 1-3 unmanned aircraft systems and unmanned surface vehicles.
"LOCUST X3 transforms how defenders respond to the challenge of massed drone attacks," said Mary Clum, President of AeroVironment's Space, Cyber & Directed Energy segment. The modular design allows for deployment on tactical vehicles, fixed sites, or maritime environments.
The system was recently featured on CBS News' 60 Minutes program. AeroVironment stated the third-generation technology has been optimized for manufacturing and force-wide deployment using modular subsystems and commercially mature components.
