Booz Allen Hamilton (NYSE: BAH) announced it has been selected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Weather Service to build a cloud-based data platform for weather forecasting systems.
The contract supports the Central Integrated Real-Time Repository for Unified Services (CIRRUS) initiative, which aims to modernize how weather data is processed and delivered using cloud technology and artificial intelligence.
Booz Allen will rebuild the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) in a secure cloud environment. AWIPS is the system used to ingest, analyze, forecast and disseminate operational weather data to forecasters who generate predictions and issue severe weather warnings.
"Building the systems that power our nation's weather forecasting is a mission of national importance," said Katie Hermosilla, Executive Vice President at Booz Allen. "This work will accelerate NWS's ability to deliver faster, more actionable environmental intelligence that protects communities, infrastructure, and economic activity across the United States."
The new platform is designed to enable faster and more resilient delivery of weather data and applications. The CIRRUS initiative represents a shift toward cloud-based weather data management and delivery systems.
Prachi Sukhatankar, Vice President at Booz Allen, said the project will help the National Weather Service "transform their operating model through an untethered workforce" and create "a scalable foundation for advanced forecasting capabilities nationwide."
The McLean, Virginia-based consulting firm employs approximately 31,600 people globally and reported revenue of $12.0 billion for the 12 months ended March 31, 2025, according to the press release statement.
