Equinix Inc. (NASDAQ: EQIX) announced March 24 a series of global workforce development initiatives designed to address talent shortages in the data center industry. The programs aim to create pathways for technical careers as demand increases due to artificial intelligence and digital transformation.
The centerpiece initiative, Pathways to Tech, will expand globally after a two-year pilot program that reached nearly 2,000 students across the Americas and Asia-Pacific. The program targets students ages 14-18, providing hands-on exposure to digital infrastructure through sessions with Equinix professionals, data center tours and education events.
"The data center industry is essential to global economic growth and technological innovation," said Alan Howard, Principal Analyst at Omdia. "Yet, the developers and engineers we speak to consistently bemoan that the industry faces a significant talent shortage."
Equinix is also launching additional programs including a Global Data Center Technician Training Coalition in partnership with Generation, a nonprofit that has supported over 150,000 people across 17 countries. The coalition's first program will begin in Brazil in June with co-funding from Cisco Systems Inc.
The company is expanding its global apprenticeship and internship programs with standardized curriculum across six markets: Brazil, France, Germany, the United States, Singapore and the United Kingdom. These programs create structured pathways to full-time operations roles.
A new Learning Labs program will debut in Dallas, Paris and Singapore, targeting early-career talent with technical backgrounds. The program provides hands-on training in data center infrastructure management, including electrical systems, cooling and climate control.
The initiatives will begin global rollout in 2026 across the Americas, EMEA and Asia-Pacific regions, according to the company's press release.
