SHELL shuts down Qatar LNG production after Ras Laffan attack

Shell plc (NYSE: SHEL) reported that its liquefied natural gas production in Qatar has been shut down since early March, according to a company statement released March 19.

An attack on Ras Laffan Industrial City occurred during the evening of March 18, causing a fire at Shell's Pearl GTL facility. The company said the fire was rapidly extinguished and all staff on site are safe. The Pearl GTL facility is currently in a safe state with the situation under control.

Shell is assessing potential damage to Pearl GTL and working with QatarEnergy and relevant authorities to understand damage to the broader Ras Laffan Industrial City facilities. The company stated that safety and security of employees and contractors remains its highest priority.

The London-based energy company continues to work closely with local authorities, partners and customers regarding the situation. Shell indicated it will provide further updates through its website.

The Pearl GTL facility is part of Shell's operations in Qatar's Ras Laffan Industrial City, which serves as a major hub for the country's natural gas processing and export activities.
