Marvel Biosciences receives US patent for autism drug candidate MB-204

Marvel Biosciences Corp. (TSXV: MRVL) (OTCQB: MBCOF) announced that the US Patent Office issued Patent No. 12,570,656 B2 for its lead therapeutic candidate MB-204, covering composition of matter and methods of use for treating disorders.

The patent marks the third major jurisdiction to grant composition of matter protection for MB-204, following previous approvals in Japan and China. Chief Executive Officer Rod Matheson stated that strong intellectual property represents a key component pharmaceutical partners seek when evaluating potential deals.

MB-204 is described as a fluorinated analogue of Istradefylline, an approved adenosine A2A receptor antagonist used for Parkinson's Disease treatment. The company reports that MB-204 has completed pre-clinical toxicology testing and demonstrated efficacy in depression studies and multiple autism models, including Rett Syndrome. Testing in Fragile X models is currently underway.

Marvel Biosciences, through its subsidiary Marvel Biotechnology Inc., develops treatments for neurological diseases and neurodevelopmental disorders. The Calgary-based biotechnology company focuses on adenosine A2A receptor blocking, which research suggests may help treat conditions including autism, depression, and Alzheimer's disease.

According to the company, approximately 1 in 36 children at age 8 have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Marvel is exploring MB-204's potential applications in rare disorders like Rett syndrome and Fragile X syndrome.

Composition of matter patents provide pharmaceutical companies with market exclusivity protection once compounds reach commercialization. The patent strengthens Marvel's intellectual property position as it advances clinical development and pursues potential partnerships.
