Meta introduces passkey encryption for WhatsApp chat backups

Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) announced the introduction of passkey-encrypted chat backups for WhatsApp, allowing users to encrypt their backups using biometric authentication methods including fingerprints, facial recognition, or screen lock codes.

The new feature eliminates the need for users to remember passwords or 64-digit encryption keys when securing their chat backups. Users can access the encryption through their device's existing biometric security features.

Meta stated that WhatsApp was the first private messaging service to launch end-to-end encrypted backups four years ago. The company plans to roll out the passkey encryption feature gradually over the coming weeks and months.

Users can access the new encryption option by navigating to WhatsApp settings, selecting Chats, then Chat backup, and choosing End-to-end encrypted backup to view available options.

The announcement was made in a press release dated October 30, 2025, as part of Meta's ongoing security enhancements for the messaging platform.
