Tesla's Musk suggests DeepSeek 'obviously' has more NVIDIA GPUs than claimed
Investing.com -- Tesla CEO Elon Musk has suggested that DeepSeek, the upstart artificial intelligence company, may possess around 50,000 NVIDIA Hopper GPUs. This is opposed to the 10,000 A100s that DeepSeek claims to have. Musk's opinion was shared in response to recent comments by Alexandr Wang, the billionaire CEO of Scale AI, who also stated that DeepSeek likely has about 50,000 NVIDIA H100s.
Musk and Wang both believe that DeepSeek is unable to disclose the true number of GPUs due to US export controls currently in place. Musk responded to a post about Wang's observation with a simple "Obviously", affirming his agreement with Wang's assertion.
Musk would have knowledge of building AI data centers, having built a massive one for his start-up, xAI.
In addition to Musk and Wang, analysts at Cantor also suspect that DeepSeek might be understating the extent of their computing power. The analysts view this development as "very bullish" for NVIDIA, suggesting they would consider buying more shares amidst the current market weakness.
The DeepSeek news has sent shares of NVIDIA down 11% in pre-open trading Monday on worries about AI capex spending.
