Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) received news Thursday morning that Hyundai and Kia have decided to embrace the North American Charging Standard (NACS) for their electric vehicles in the United States and Canada.
This move makes them the latest additions to a growing list of companies making the transition, following Honda's decision to adopt NACS in September.
Hyundai is scheduled to implement the NACS in the U.S. during the 4Q of 2024, with Canadian vehicles expected to adopt it in the first half of 2025.
With this commitment, Hyundai's electric vehicles will soon have access to over 12,000 Tesla Superchargers throughout North America, effectively doubling the availability of DC fast-charging options for Hyundai EV drivers.
“Our collaboration with Tesla marks another milestone in our commitment to delivering exceptional EV experiences to our customers,” Said Hyundai COO José Muñoz.
“We’re proud to welcome Hyundai as the latest adopter of the North American Charging Standard.” said Tesla Senior Director of Charging, Rebecca Tinucci.
Kia's electric vehicles will also join the North American Tesla Supercharger network in 4Q24.
Existing Niro EV and EV6 owners, as well as future EV9 drivers, will be able to access the Superchargers through a forthcoming NACS adapter and software updates.
“As a leader in electrified mobility, Kia offers a growing number of world-class EVs with high-speed DC charging capabilities that will now be supported by the NACS charging network,” Said Kia America CEO, Sean Yoon.
Hyundai and Kia become the tenth and eleventh automakers to embrace the NACS, following agreements that Tesla initially forged with Aptera and Ford.
