Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) might be trimming down its Hardware division headcount, but the company isn't out of the smartphone game entirely.
According to Digitimes, Microsoft will likely focus on high-end and business-use smartphone devices moving forward. The company will also look for its partners to produce lower-cost devices for emerging markets.
Market watchers and even Microsoft itself aren't totally convinced that Windows 10 will create new demand for the company's smartphones.
Partners in Windows phone production include: Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, HTC, ZTE, Huawei, Gionee, Karbonn, and Xolo. Most of Microsoft's partners, however, are still focused on Android phone production.
Shares of Microsoft are up 0.9 percent at midday Tuesday.
