Oral Wegovy reaches 33% of total prescriptions by May

Investing.com -- Oral Wegovy accounted for approximately 33% of total Wegovy prescriptions in May, according to a Bank of America report released Thursday. The oral formulation reached 159,000 weekly total prescriptions in the week ending June 5, 2026.

The oral version of Wegovy launched in early January and has grown rapidly since its introduction. Weekly new prescriptions for oral Wegovy represented 40% of total new Wegovy prescriptions in the week ending June 5, 2026. The mix of oral prescriptions has stabilized in the low-30% range over recent weeks after initial rapid growth.

The broader GLP-1 drug category showed weekly total prescription growth of approximately 33% year-over-year in May. This compared to 32% growth in April and 31% in March. The growth rate has remained in a 30-35% year-over-year range since July 2025.

Weekly new prescription growth for GLP-1 drugs was 28% year-over-year in the week ending June 5, 2026. In April, GLP-1 monthly sales grew 35% year-over-year, compared to 38% in March and 36% in February.

Cigna will end coverage of GLP-1 weight loss drugs, including Wegovy and Zepbound, in its employee health plan effective July 1, 2026. The company cited increased availability and evolving treatment options as reasons for the change.

The Pharmaceutical Strategies Group 2026 report found that 94% of employers cover GLP-1 drugs for type 2 diabetes, but only 34% cover them for obesity treatment. Among employers surveyed, 14% said they were exiting coverage and 31% were unwilling to adopt coverage at any price.

CMS's prior authorization form for the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program lists McKesson's CoverMyMeds as the electronic vendor.
