NEPHROS touts ultrafiltration as microplastic filter after EPA ruling

June 16, 2026 7:03 AM

Nephros, Inc. (NASDAQ: NEPH) highlighted the capability of its ultrafiltration technology to capture microplastics and nanoplastics in drinking water, following a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency decision in April 2026 to include microplastics as a priority contaminant group under the Safe Drinking Water Act's draft Contaminant Candidate List (CCL 6).

Microplastics are plastic particles ranging from 1 micrometer to 5 millimeters in size, while nanoplastics measure smaller than 1 micrometer. The company states its ultrafiltration products are engineered with pore sizes as small as 5 nanometers, which it says enables size-based exclusion of both micro- and nanoplastic particles, in addition to bacteria and viruses.

"As regulatory and scientific attention shift to microplastics and nanoplastics, the need for proven, high-performance filtration solutions becomes increasingly urgent," said Robert Banks, President and Chief Executive Officer of Nephros. "Our ultrafiltration technology was designed to support contaminant retention at a level that is directly aligned with this emerging concern."

The EPA's draft CCL 6 designation does not constitute a regulatory mandate but signals potential future action on microplastic contamination in drinking water. Nephros, based in South Orange, N.J., provides filtration products to healthcare and commercial markets. The announcement was based on a company press release.
