Alcon launches UNITY CS cataract surgical system in Canada

June 15, 2026 9:45 AM

Alcon Inc. announced the Canadian launch of its UNITY Cataract System (CS) at the Canadian Ophthalmological Society Annual Meeting in Montreal, Quebec, taking place June 18-21, 2026.

The UNITY CS is a standalone cataract surgical platform that forms part of Alcon's UNITY platform, which has supported more than 285,000 procedures globally across 1,350 systems worldwide. The system is designed as a dedicated cataract surgery solution, separate from the UNITY Vitreoretinal Cataract System (VCS) that handles both vitreoretinal and cataract procedures.

According to the company, the UNITY CS leverages a phacoemulsification modality engineered to deliver up to two times faster nucleus removal with 40% less energy delivered into the eye compared to previous systems. The platform features a phaco handpiece that estimates temperature at the incision site.

"With UNITY CS, we are bringing forward technology designed to help surgeons and surgical teams operate with greater efficiency, consistency, and confidence in cataract surgery while supporting a smoother workflow in the operating room," said Mark Newson, Country Manager and Head of Surgical, Alcon Canada.

The UNITY platform received recognition in 2026, with UNITY VCS named Overall Winner in the BIG Innovation Awards and receiving a Silver Edison Award in the Surgical Robotics & Precision Therapy category.

The Canadian launch is part of Alcon's broader product introduction wave in 2026, which includes multiple new products across surgical and therapeutic categories including UNITY VCS, PanOptix Pro, and Valeda photobiomodulation device for treating early and intermediate dry age-related macular degeneration.

The information is based on a company press release.
