SunPower completes 221 kW solar installation at San Francisco plaza
SunPower Inc. (NASDAQ: SPWR) and its subsidiary Cobalt Power Systems completed a 220.9 kW solar installation at San Francisco's Waterfront Plaza, the company announced. The project will generate approximately 349,000 kWh of electricity annually.
The installation, located across from Pier 33 on San Francisco's waterfront, utilized 554 solar photovoltaic modules. The project required custom engineering solutions due to the building's post-tension concrete roof structure. Installation teams deployed custom-engineered anchor points and distributed more than 3,000 ballast blocks across the roof to meet structural and seismic stability requirements.
Cobalt Power Systems partnered with Wunder Power on the project. The installation required extensive coordination due to dense post-tension cable layouts beneath the roof membrane and multiple attachment methodologies.
"Projects like Waterfront Plaza demonstrate what is possible and showcase the technical expertise and execution capabilities that have defined Cobalt Power Systems for more than two decades," said John Paul Bergh, Cobalt president.
SunPower CEO T.J. Rodgers described the project as providing "a peek at our engineering future as enhanced by the acquisition of Silicon Valley-based Cobalt." He noted the mounting system makes the installation earthquake resilient and creates light pathways for potential use with future bifacial solar panels.
The project represents a commercial milestone for Cobalt as it expands its portfolio of commercial solar installations throughout California. The completion strengthens the partnership between Cobalt Power Systems and Wunder Power as both companies continue expanding operations across California and the United States.
