Westwater Resources files Clean Water Act permit for Alabama graphite project
Westwater Resources Inc. (NYSE American: WWR) submitted a Section 404 permit application to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for its Coosa Graphite Deposit in Coosa County, Alabama, the company announced.
The application, filed under the Clean Water Act, addresses potential water impacts from future development activities at the project site. The filing represents another step in the permitting process for the deposit, which the company describes as the largest graphite deposit in the contiguous United States.
"Submission of the Section 404 permit application reflects continued progress in advancing Coosa through the permitting process," said Frank Bakker, President and Chief Executive Officer of Westwater Resources.
The Section 404 application follows a permit application the company filed earlier this year with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management. The Coosa project is listed on the federal FAST-41 Permitting Dashboard, which provides a public timetable for environmental review and permitting activities.
Westwater said it anticipates evaluating a final investment decision for the Coosa project following completion of the broader permitting process. The deposit is located approximately 30 miles from the company's Kellyton Graphite Plant in east-central Alabama.
The company stated that Coosa is intended to serve as a domestic feedstock source for the Kellyton facility, which is being developed to process natural flake graphite into battery-grade graphite for lithium-ion battery anodes.
The information is based on a company press release.
