ING names KPN executive Hilde Garssen as new CHRO for management board

June 15, 2026 2:58 AM

ING Group announced that Hilde Garssen will join the Management Board Banking as chief human resources officer, effective September 1, 2026. Garssen currently serves as chief people officer and board member at KPN.

The appointment follows the departure of Ruth McGill, who left ING in November 2025. Isaac Vitini has overseen the CHRO role on an interim basis since McGill's exit. The European Central Bank has approved Garssen's appointment.

ING has elevated the CHRO position to its management board level, reflecting what the company describes as the increasing importance of people and culture in its strategic operations. The bank trades on exchanges in Amsterdam and New York (NYSE: ING).

Garssen brings more than 25 years of experience across banking and telecommunications sectors. She has held the chief people officer role at KPN since 2018 and joined the company's board of management in 2019. Prior to KPN, she spent 19 years at ABN AMRO in senior human resources and transformation positions.

"I am pleased that Hilde will join ING," said Steven van Rijswijk, CEO of ING. "Her broad experience in people leadership, transformation and organisational development will be invaluable as we continue to strengthen our culture and deliver on our strategy."

Garssen stated she has "always admired ING for being a digital bank where people and technology come together" and looks forward to developing the people strategy and culture at the organization.
