India delays final report on Air India 787 crash investigation

June 12, 2026 9:17 AM

Investing.com -- India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau announced Friday that it will delay the final report on last year's Air India crash, stating that the investigation into the country's deadliest commercial airline disaster requires more time to complete.

The AAIB said authorities have conducted an extensive examination of all technical, operational, organizational and human factors related to the accident over the past year. The agency said additional technical evaluations and specialist examinations will continue to ensure all findings are supported by verified evidence and sound scientific analysis.

The delay stems partly from ongoing examination of the Boeing Co. plane's engines, manufactured by GE Aerospace, which is still being conducted in the United States. The final report may be released within three months, according to people familiar with the matter.

Flight AI 171 crashed on June 12, 2025, just 32 seconds after takeoff from Ahmedabad en route to London. The accident killed 241 passengers and crew members, along with 19 people on the ground, after the aircraft hit a densely populated urban area beyond the airport perimeter. One passenger survived.

The AAIB released preliminary findings on July 12, 2025, which revealed both engines shut down after two fuel control switches in the cockpit were moved from the "run" to the "cut-off" position in quick succession. The preliminary report did not establish why the switches were moved or by whom.

Cockpit audio captured one pilot asking the other why he had flipped the switches, with the other denying doing so. The report did not identify which pilot made which statement.

The crash marked the first accident involving a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. A pilots' association has urged the AAIB to conduct a deeper examination of the aircraft's computer and operating systems.

The AAIB urged the public to refrain from speculation or premature conclusions about the crash.
