Visa partners with OpenAI to enable AI agent payments

June 10, 2026 2:00 PM

Visa Inc. (NYSE: V) announced a strategic collaboration with OpenAI to integrate secure payment capabilities into AI-powered commerce experiences. The partnership was announced at the Visa Payments Forum in San Francisco.

The collaboration will enable Visa payments within what the companies term "agentic commerce," allowing AI agents to conduct transactions on behalf of users. Visa will provide its global payment network, security infrastructure, and credentialing capabilities to support these AI-driven payment experiences.

Under the partnership, Visa's payment capabilities will be integrated into OpenAI's platforms, giving developers and merchants access to Visa payment processing initiated by AI agents. The system will include tokenized Visa credentials, real-time authorization, and fraud monitoring.

Transactions will operate within user-defined parameters including spending limits, merchant categories, and approval requirements. The companies stated that all transactions will require clearly defined user permissions and controls.

The collaboration is part of Visa's Intelligent Commerce initiative, which focuses on extending payment capabilities into new digital environments. The companies plan to explore enterprise applications, including developer-focused experiences and automated workflows as AI continues to evolve as a digital interface.

"AI will transform commerce more profoundly than the internet or mobile technology ever did," said Jack Forestell, Visa's Chief Product and Strategy Officer. "As AI agents become active participants in the economy, Visa's focus is to ensure transactions are trusted, secure and seamless."

Marco Mahrus, Head of Partnerships, Commerce at OpenAI, said the integration aims to build infrastructure for "secure, transparent, and user-controlled agentic transactions" while maintaining payment security.

The announcement was based on information from a company press release.
