CVS adds Zepbound back to formulary, expands GLP-1 coverage

June 10, 2026 9:00 AM

CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) announced it will add Zepbound (tirzepatide) back to its commercial formularies as a preferred option starting October 1, 2026. The pharmacy benefits manager also removed the new-to-market block on Foundayo (orforglipron), an oral GLP-1 therapy, effective June 1, 2026.

The changes expand GLP-1 weight management medication options for members of plan sponsors that adopt CVS Caremark template formularies. Plan sponsors retain discretion to customize coverage for their members.

"We're creating access and options that would not have existed without our leadership in the market," said Ed DeVaney, President of CVS Caremark. "We acted boldly through active engagement and negotiation with our drug manufacturer partners to tackle affordability and access for our customers and their members."

CVS Caremark stated it has been working with manufacturers to secure more affordable costs for GLP-1 medications over the past year. The company cited high prices as putting these therapies out of reach for many people who could benefit from them.

The formulary updates represent part of CVS Health's efforts to address rising prescription drug costs. As of March 31, 2026, CVS Health operated approximately 9,000 retail pharmacy locations and served approximately 88 million plan members through its pharmacy benefits management business.

CVS Caremark will provide communication and support to customers, consultants, providers and members during the transition to covered therapies, including outreach, educational resources and clinical support programs.
