Oral GLP-1 obesity drugs see rapid early adoption, Bernstein survey shows
Investing.com -- Oral GLP-1 therapies for obesity are experiencing a fast start in the U.S. market, though utilization remains limited in the early stages of commercialization, according to a Bernstein provider survey conducted in mid-to-late May.
The survey included 25 U.S.-based healthcare providers across 14 states with various practice settings. Most respondents reported that oral GLP-1s account for 10% or less of new weekly obesity prescriptions, indicating modest current penetration.
Providers largely expect oral GLP-1s to expand the total addressable patient population rather than replace injectable therapies. The oral formulations are anticipated to attract new patient segments, particularly those who prefer to avoid injections. Most providers forecast that oral therapies will remain below 50% of the treatment mix over the next few years.
Cost and insurance coverage represent the primary barriers to long-term adoption, according to the survey. Providers consistently cited price and access as the main obstacles to treatment persistence, while tolerability concerns were notably absent.
In the competitive landscape, providers view oral Wegovy from Novo Nordisk as more effective, while Foundayo is favored for ease of use due to the absence of fasting and food-timing requirements. Tolerability is perceived as comparable between the two products.
Prescribing intent remains balanced at approximately 52% for Foundayo versus 48% for Wegovy, suggesting neither product has established a clear advantage.
Bernstein noted that providers showed strong perception of Foundayo on ease of use, with 68% preferring it, and 60% viewing tolerability as equivalent between the two drugs. The firm said Foundayo began television advertising during NBA finals last night, three weeks earlier than anticipated.
