Waters launches battery safety testing instrument

June 9, 2026 8:04 AM

Waters Corporation (NYSE: WAT) announced the launch of its Coin Cell Differential Scanning Calorimeter, a testing instrument designed for battery safety analysis. The company said the device enables direct testing of fully assembled coin cells without requiring cell disassembly.

The instrument integrates heat flow, evolved gas, and electrochemical analysis in a single experiment, according to Waters. The system operates within a temperature range of –80 °C to 600 °C and includes voltage monitoring and charge/discharge capabilities.

"The Coin Cell DSC represents a significant advancement in battery thermal analysis," said Yu Cheng, Vice President, Research and Development and Product Solutions, Materials Sciences at Waters Corporation. "Simultaneously capturing thermal, evolved gas, and electrochemical data is not only faster, but also correlates data from the same sample for more exacting insights earlier in development."

Waters stated that the device's design eliminates cell teardown requirements, reducing sample preparation time by more than 90% compared to traditional methods. The system can be coupled with mass spectrometry, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, or Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry for gas composition analysis.

The company described the instrument as an alternative to accelerating rate calorimetry methods, which typically require large cell formats and longer experiment times. Waters said traditional testing methods are usually deployed during late-stage research and development.

Shirley Meng, Professor at the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago and Director of the Energy Storage Research Alliance, commented on the technology's potential applications in early-stage battery safety research.

The Waters TA Instruments Coin Cell DSC is available for order, with shipments expected to begin in August 2026, according to the company's announcement.
