Calpine completes 25MW expansion at California geothermal complex

June 8, 2026 8:01 AM

Calpine, a business unit of Constellation Energy Corporation (NASDAQ: CEG), completed a 25-megawatt expansion project at The Geysers geothermal complex in Sonoma County, California, according to a company statement.

The expansion adds to Calpine's investments at The Geysers, following completion of a 38-megawatt energy storage system at the site in 2024. The company stated the new capacity will generate enough electricity to power over 25,000 homes annually.

Of the 25 megawatts, 18 megawatts will supply Clean Power Alliance, which serves customers across Southern California. The remaining 7 megawatts, brought online last year, supply MCE for Bay Area residents and businesses.

"As California's electricity demand continues to grow, investments in reliable, around-the-clock renewable energy are more important than ever," said Aimee Blaine, senior vice president of Calpine's geothermal region.

The expansion was completed under a Project Labor Agreement with local labor unions to build piping infrastructure. The Geysers operates as the world's largest geothermal complex, generating electricity from natural steam reservoirs beneath the earth's surface.

Matthew Langer, chief operating officer of Clean Power Alliance, stated that "geothermal power plays an important role in providing around-the-clock renewable electricity."

The Geysers has provided geothermal energy across California for over 65 years. Geothermal power operates continuously regardless of weather conditions or time of day.

Constellation Energy Corporation operates 55 gigawatts of capacity from nuclear, natural gas, oil, geothermal, hydro, wind and solar facilities. The company serves approximately 2.5 million customer accounts nationwide.
