AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) announced plans to invest up to £2 billion over five years in the United Kingdom to support AI innovation and research. The semiconductor company made the announcement at London Tech Week, outlining investments designed to expand the UK's AI ecosystem and computing infrastructure.

The investment will support advanced computing, scientific research and workforce development across the UK. AMD will establish strategic partnerships with Imperial College London and Oriole Networks to advance AI, quantum and next-generation computing research.

"The United Kingdom has the talent, research excellence and ambition to help lead the next era of AI," said Dr. Lisa Su, chair and CEO of AMD. "AMD is proud to deepen our commitment to the UK and work with partners across government, academia and industry to expand access to the compute infrastructure needed to advance sovereign AI, accelerate discovery and drive long-term economic growth."

AMD and Dell Technologies will support the University of Cambridge's Zenith AI supercomputer and Sunrise fusion AI system. Zenith is funded by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and UK Research and Innovation, while Sunrise is funded by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and owned by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority.

The collaboration with Imperial College London will focus on computational science research, including healthcare innovation and climate modeling. AMD will also work with Oriole Networks on the UK's Advanced Research and Invention Agency Scaling Inference Lab, combining Oriole's PRISM photonic networking architecture with AMD processors and GPUs.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves called the investment "a major vote of confidence in Britain's place as a global AI superpower." Technology Secretary Liz Kendall said the investment reflects "the strength of Britain's talent, research and ambition in AI."

The initiatives align with the UK's AI Opportunities Action Plan and AI Hardware Strategy, according to the company's statement.
