Eli Lilly invests additional $4.5 billion in Indiana manufacturing sites
Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY) announced an additional $4.5 billion investment across two of its three Lebanon, Indiana manufacturing sites, bringing the pharmaceutical company's total Indiana capital expansion commitments since 2020 to more than $21 billion.
The investment will target Lilly Lebanon API, a future active pharmaceutical ingredient production site, and Lilly Lebanon Advanced Therapies, the company's first dedicated genetic medicine manufacturing facility that opened May 6, 2026. The Lebanon Advanced Therapies facility is designed to support clinical and commercial production of genetic medicines and represents the first of three planned sites on the Lebanon campus.
The Lebanon API site will produce tirzepatide for Zepbound and Mounjaro medications, as well as Foundayo (orforglipron), Lilly's FDA-approved once-daily weight loss pill, and retatrutide, an investigational triple hormone receptor agonist. When the Lebanon API site opens in 2027, it will be the largest API production site in U.S. history, according to the company.
"From genetic medicines that could one day prevent disease at its source, to Foundayo, a pill making weight loss treatment accessible to millions, we are not just discovering the medicines of the future—we are building the world's most advanced plants to make them," said David A. Ricks, Lilly chair and CEO.
An upcoming report from Indiana University's Kelley School of Business indicates that Lilly accounts for 70% of Indiana's pharmaceutical GDP and every Lilly job supports more than two additional jobs across the state. The company estimates that for every dollar it spends in the area, up to four dollars in additional local economic activity is generated.
Lilly's U.S. capital expansion commitments since 2020 total more than $50 billion. The company plans to break ground on several recently announced U.S. manufacturing sites this year, according to the press release statement.
