Surf Air Mobility completes safety system ahead of federal deadline

April 17, 2026 7:30 AM

Surf Air Mobility Inc. (NYSE: SRFM) announced that its airline operations through Southern Airways Express have completed implementation of a Safety Management System, meeting federal compliance requirements a year ahead of the Federal Aviation Administration's May 2027 deadline.

Southern Airways Express joins eight other Part 135 commuter operators that have confirmed operational SMS compliance. The company submitted a declaration of 14CFR Part 5 compliance, signifying completion of the safety system implementation.

The SMS applies to Surf Air Mobility's scheduled Part 135 commuter operations, which operate under the Southern Airways and Mokulele Airlines brands. The company's network carries approximately 300,000 passengers annually on more than 60,000 scheduled departures across the United States.

A Safety Management System provides a structured framework for identifying hazards and managing operational risks. The system includes monitoring performance through data collection and analysis, establishing management accountability for safety, and maintaining employee training programs.

"Safety is the foundation of our business," said Louis Saint-Cyr, President Airlines of Surf Air Mobility. "Our Safety Management System enhances our ability to deliver safe, reliable regional air service across our operations and provides a strong operational foundation as we prepare to integrate electric aircraft into our network."

The SMS implementation also supports the company's Surf On Demand charter business by establishing processes to vet third-party operator partners for safety and compliance standards.

Surf Air Mobility operates one of the largest commuter airlines in the United States by scheduled departures and is developing technology for electric aircraft integration and air operations modernization.
