So which stocks have preformed the best since reporting earnings so far this earnings season?
Many companies issued solid earnings beats, while some failed to meet Street expectations. The earthquake in Japan halted some product production, while turmoil in the Middle East sent crude prices rocketing higher. Investors also murmured about the potential collapse of the euro following recent debt issues with Greece, Portugal, et al.
Though the second-quarter earnings season is still relatively new at just two-weeks old, let's take a look at some of the winners and losers who have performed the best since reporting (numbers will be as of yesterday's close, unless noted).
Winners:
Many companies issued solid earnings beats, while some failed to meet Street expectations. The earthquake in Japan halted some product production, while turmoil in the Middle East sent crude prices rocketing higher. Investors also murmured about the potential collapse of the euro following recent debt issues with Greece, Portugal, et al.
Though the second-quarter earnings season is still relatively new at just two-weeks old, let's take a look at some of the winners and losers who have performed the best since reporting (numbers will be as of yesterday's close, unless noted).
Winners:
- Universal Forest Products Inc. (Nasdaq: UFPI) - up 31.4 percent. Though down 1.8 percent on the session, Universal Forest ripped from $24.07 to $31.63 following its earnings release on July 13th. UFPI reported EPS of $0.22, $0.07 better than the analyst estimate of $0.15. Revenue for the quarter came in at $544.1 million versus the consensus estimate of $568.93 million.
- TESSCO Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq: TESS) - up 28.4 percent. Well, TESSCO reported this morning, but earnings and guidance were a doozy. TESSCO had EPS of $0.57, $0.17 better than the analyst estimate of $0.40. Revenue for the quarter came in at $163.5 million versus the consensus estimate of $150.57 million. The company sees FY12 EPS of $1.70 to $2.10, versus the consensus of $1.33.
- Material Sciences Corp. (Nasdaq: MASC) - up 16.9 percent. Earnings for Material Sciences came in better on a year-over-year basis. On July 11th, Material Sciences reported EPS of $0.33, versus $0.31 reported last year. Revenue for the quarter came in at $36.04 million, versus $42.47 million reported last year.
- Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG) - up 13.9 percent. Google smashed expectations, and investors have responded. Google reported after the market closed on July 14th.
- Piper Jaffray Companies (NYSE: PJC) - up 10.4 percent. This morning, PJ reported EPS of $0.55, $0.06 better than the analyst estimate of $0.49. Revenue for the quarter came in at $135.9 million versus the consensus estimate of $131.33 million.
- MGIC Investment Corp. (MTG) - down 25.3 percent. MGIC reported a GAAP loss of $0.86 per share, noncomparable to the analyst estimate of ($0.02). Revenue for the quarter came in at $367 million versus the consensus estimate of $346.72 million.
- Riverbed Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: RVBD) - down 23.7% percent. Yesterday, Riverbed reported EPS of $0.21, in-line with the analyst estimate of $0.21. Revenue for the quarter came in at $170.3 million versus the consensus estimate of $172.86 million.
- Fortinet Inc. (Nasdaq: FTNT) - down 23.7% percent. Reported EPS of $0.09, $0.01 better than the analyst estimate of $0.08. Revenue for the quarter came in at $103 million versus the consensus estimate of $96.65 million.
- Peregrine Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq: PPHM) - down 15.3% percent. Last Thursday, reported a loss of ($0.15), in-line with the analyst estimate of ($0.15). Revenue for the quarter came in at $2.83 million versus the consensus estimate of $2.28 million.
- Dynavax Technologies Corporation (Nasdaq: DVAX) - down 15.3% percent. Reported this morning, had a loss of ($0.09), $0.02 better than the analyst estimate of ($0.11). Revenue for the quarter came in at $7.27 million versus the consensus estimate of $6.13 million.
