Amazon (AMZN) and Apple (AAPL): Switching Places in Tablets

May 18, 2012 8:16 AM EDT
Investors in Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) are responding to reports Friday the company will be coming out with a new look for its Kindle Fire.

It's kind of a big change too...literally. Reports from Digitimes suggested Amazon is expected to launch a 10.1-inch version of its Kindle Fire in the third quarter of 2012. The move will put plans for an 8.9-inch model on hold, Digitimes said.

Momentum for Amazon tablet PC orders are expected to ramp-up at the end of the second quarter, according to sources.

With Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) continuing to dominate the tablet PC market -- even amid the notably higher price -- and Samsung having a 10-inch tablet in its Galaxy, Amazon would do well to offer a larger version for those that want one.

Ironically, Apple has been rumored for some time to be mulling a smaller iPad tablet...to the tune of 7-inches or so. This entire tablet thing is starting to get a little crazy if you ask Patti from HR.

In total, shipments of Amazon's Kindle Fire tablets, including the 7-inch versions currently available, should hit 30 million to 40 million for calendar 2012. The number compares with 73 million units expected for Apple's iOS-based tablet, according to research from Gartner.
